Explosion Risk Assessment (ERA): safety and ATEX compliance
The Explosion Risk Assessment (ERA) is a mandatory procedure for companies handling flammable substances, fuels, or potentially explosive dusts. Its main goals are twofold: to identify hazards related to explosive atmospheres and to define preventive and protective measures that reduce ignition risks and mitigate consequences.
The legal framework is set by Title XI of Legislative Decree 81/2008, requiring risk area classification and the drafting of the Explosion Protection Document (EPD). At the European level, Directive 1999/92/EC (ATEX 137) defines the minimum safety requirements for workers exposed to explosive atmospheres.
ERA follows several key steps:
Identification of hazardous substances (gases, vapors, mists, dusts).
Classification of ATEX zones (0-1-2 for gases/vapors; 20-21-22 for dusts).
Analysis of ignition sources according to EN 1127-1.
Evaluation of probability and severity to define risk levels.
Implementation of technical and organizational measures (ventilation, ATEX-certified equipment, safe procedures, maintenance).
The Explosion Protection Document (EPD) summarizes the assessment, listing hazardous substances, ignition sources, classified areas, and safety measures. It must be prepared before operations begin and updated after plant modifications, incidents, or regulatory changes.
Zanocco Srl offers full support in explosion risk management: technical and regulatory consultancy, design of ATEX-compliant systems, and maintenance or revamping of existing plants. A reliable partner to ensure safety, compliance, and operational continuity.
