In the PET food industry, industrial safety is non-negotiable. During the storage, handling, and processing of combustible powders like flours and protein blends, potentially explosive atmospheres can form. Compliance with the ATEX Directive is not just a regulatory obligation, but a tangible safeguard for people, plants, and production continuity.
In this case history on ATEX silos, SMI Zanocco supported a major pet food producer in achieving ATEX compliance for their storage silos, designing a complete explosion protection system with custom venting and flap valves for explosion isolation.
The project began with dedicated ATEX consultancy for the silos, which included risk area classification, ignition source analysis, preliminary sizing of venting devices, and the definition of prevention measures. This phase overcame the lack of original technical drawings and identified solutions fully compliant with ATEX regulations.
The SMI Zanocco technical team then developed an integrated explosion safety system, including ATEX Directive-sized venting devices, relief ducts for overpressure, flap valves on the loading pipes, and integration with existing control systems. The silos were thus fully upgraded, ensuring safety and operational continuity.
The preparation of ATEX technical documentation was also crucial, including calculation reports, mechanical and electrical drawings, wiring diagrams, and operational manuals, all essential for traceability and long-term maintenance.
Finally, SMI Zanocco managed the installation, testing, and commissioning of the system. The result is a safe and certified ATEX explosion protection system, transforming regulatory compliance into a strategic investment for corporate safety and efficiency.
